Current Season Start:
Season 40 Light's Calling
Ruf des Lichts
The Angels of the High Heavens step in: Angelic Crucibles sanctify legendary items and grant them one of three class-specific powers. The season theme first debuted in Season 27.

Season change dates
There are a little over four days between the end of Season 39 and the start of Season 40.
Season 39 ends
September 27, 2026 at 5 p.m. PDT (September 28, 2:00 a.m. CEST). Your seasonal heroes then move to non-seasonal play along with their gear and Paragon levels.
Season 40 starts
October 2, 2026 at 5 p.m. local server time: PDT in the Americas, CEST in Europe and KST in Asia.
New hero, fresh start
Seasonal heroes start at level 1 with their own Paragon level, stash and gold — kept separate from non-seasonal play.
Use the break
Pick your class before the start: you only get one set from Haedrig's Gift per season, and it depends on the character that opens it.
Light's Calling: Angelic Crucibles
The core theme of Season 40 — first seen in Season 27, now back.
Sanctify legendaries
Angelic Crucibles are a consumable item. Use one to sanctify an equippable level 70 legendary item – according to the game files not a crafted one, and not one you are wearing or that is still unidentified. The crucible is consumed and the item becomes bound to your account.
One of three powers
Each sanctified item gains one of three new class-specific powers at random. You only find out which one when you sanctify it.
Class strengths
Blizzard wants the crucibles to lean into the expertise of each class and further exemplify its respective strengths.
Powers as in Season 27
They are the same class powers as in Seasons 27 and 34, three per class – and that is how they appear in the current game files (version 2.8.0). All 21 are in the next section.
The Angelic Crucible powers
Three powers per class; a sanctified item gets one of them at random. Checked against the 2.8.0 game files – unchanged since Season 27.
Barbarian
-
Pulls in and holds all enemies within 25 yards.
-
Hits in all directions around you. Every tenth cast unleashes a powerful shockwave.
-
Hits build stacks of Tempest Rhythm (max 50). Wrath of the Berserker consumes them and startles enemies within 16 yards, who take 2% more damage per stack for 20 seconds.
Crusader
-
Crackles with energy, damaging enemies within 15 yards of its path. All runes except Dominion throw the hammer straight ahead.
-
Strikes a random nearby enemy on its own every 2 seconds. After Steed Charge it fires more rapidly for 5 seconds.
-
You descend from the sky with two Archangels that cast Consecration and Condemn.
Demon Hunter
-
Casts your last non-channeled Hatred spender.
-
Unleashes a barrage of rockets that deal damage based on the enemies' maximum life. The number of rockets grows over 30 seconds; elites and bosses take less damage per rocket.
-
Instead of dropping explosive ordnance it fires piercing rays of light.
Monk
-
Summons a bell at the target location that deals damage whenever a player attacks it. Up to five bells at once.
-
Every punch uses the second-stage combo punch. Consecutive hits add 2% damage each (max 350 stacks).
-
Your target is barraged with spiritual punches for 15 seconds. Only one enemy at a time.
Necromancer
-
Your Golem picks up corpses within 20 yards (up to 30). Each stored corpse lets you cast a corpse-spending skill with the maximum number of corpses.
-
Enemies within 50 yards are constantly attacked by Army of the Dead with the Unconventional Warfare rune.
-
Hitting enemies with Death Nova five times in a row adds a spirit that afflicts an enemy every fifth cast. Up to three spirits at a time.
Witch Doctor
-
Enemies hit by Locust Swarm are also Haunted. Piranhas pulls all Haunted enemies within 60 yards into the pool. With the Bogadile rune, stunned normal enemies die instantly; elites and bosses take massive damage.
-
Becomes an aura: on top of its other effects, enemies take 100% more damage and deal 15% less.
-
Gargantuan / Summon Zombie Dogs / Sacrifice
You periodically summon two Gargantuans and three Zombie Dogs. Gargantuans gain the Restless Giant rune, Zombie Dogs gain all runes. Enemies hit by Sacrifice are Immolated and take 100% more damage from your pets.
Wizard
-
Charges over 30 seconds. Casting it at full charge releases a thunderbolt that kills a random enemy within 30 yards; elites and bosses take heavy damage instead.
-
Periodically spawns up to four orbiting charges that each create an extra orb when you cast. With the Arcane Orbit rune, all charges detonate at once.
-
Fires 10 missiles and gains the effect of the Seeker rune.
Blizzard has not published a separate list for Season 40 yet. The theme already returned in Season 34 without any announced changes to the powers. We have checked the powers against the current game files (version 2.8.0): all 21 appear there with the same wording and values as in this list. Source of the texts: Blizzard's Season 27 preview.

Season 40 FAQ
When does Diablo 3 Season 40 start?
Season 40 "Light's Calling" starts on October 2, 2026 at 5 p.m. local server time (PDT in the Americas, CEST in Europe, KST in Asia). Season 39 ends before that, on September 27, 2026 at 5 p.m. PDT.
What is the Season 40 theme?
Light's Calling: Angelic Crucibles are a consumable that sanctifies any equippable legendary item and grants it one of three class-specific powers at random. The theme first debuted in Season 27.
Which powers do Angelic Crucibles grant in Season 40?
Blizzard has not published a list for Season 40 yet. In Seasons 27 and 34 each class had three powers, for example: Whirlwind pulls in enemies within 25 yards (Barbarian), Fist of the Heavens strikes on its own every 2 seconds (Crusader) and Storm Armor kills a random normal enemy at full charge (Wizard). The current game files (version 2.8.0) list all 21 powers unchanged.

Barbarian: Horde of the Ninety Savages, Crusader: Aegis of Valor, Demon Hunter: Gears of Dreadlands, Monk: Patterns of Justice, Necromancer: Masquerade of the Burning Carnival, Witch Doctor: Mundunugu's Regalia, Wizard: The Typhon's Veil.
How do I get an extra stash tab in Season 40?
Complete the eight Conqueror objectives of the Season Journey, including a Torment XIII Nephalem Rift within five minutes, Azmodan on Torment X in under 30 seconds and a solo level 60 Greater Rift. You get one tab per season, up to five.
Which build should I play at the start of Season 40?
Until Season 40 leaderboards exist, our tier list based on Season 39 is the best starting point. If you start with the set from Haedrig's Gift, there is a matching build for each of the seven sets.
