Piranhas

Piranhas summons a swarm of deadly fish in an area that deals poison damage over several seconds and — most valuably — slaps a damage amplifier on every affected enemy. It's precisely this debuff that makes the spell a staple of many builds: you drop it into a group before bursting, then let all your remaining damage land amplified.

The Piranhado rune is the most-played: the swarm becomes a tornado that actively sucks enemies into its centre and holds them tightly together — ideal for bunching packs up for your area damage while the amp is active. Wave of Mutilation is the alternative for more direct damage and also extends the amplifier effect, which pays off in single-target-heavy situations.

Runes compared

  • Bogadile (from level 62): a bogadile stuns a single enemy and bites it for 1100% weapon damage as Physical, the pick for single targets and physical setups.
  • Zombie Piranhas (level 63): the fish leap at nearby enemies, extending the pool's reach.
  • Piranhado (level 65): the tornado lasts 4 seconds and periodically sucks enemies in. The price is a cooldown that rises from 8 to 16 seconds. In practice this rune still wins out most of the time, because tightly grouped packs make all your other area damage better.
  • Wave of Mutilation (level 67): a wave crashes forward for 475% weapon damage and keeps the 15% amplifier on enemies for 8 seconds.
  • Frozen Piranhas (level 69): converts the damage to Cold and chills enemies for the whole duration.

Items and sets that build on Piranhas

Bakuli Jungle Wraps turn Piranhas into an enabler: enemies affected by Piranhas or Locust Swarm take 250–300% more damage from Firebats, so a roll close to 300% is worth chasing. In Helltooth Harness, Piranhas triggers Necrosis through the 2-piece bonus, and the 6-piece bonus raises its damage by 37,500% after Wall of Death. Spirit of Arachyr counts Piranhas as a creature skill, which its 6-piece bonus boosts by 11,500%.

Fitting partners

Grave Injustice trims all cooldowns whenever an enemy dies nearby, which offsets the longer Piranhado cooldown. Locust Swarm also satisfies the Bakuli condition, and Horrify fears enemies in place inside the pool.
