A tough belt for melee fighters

The String of Ears reduces a fixed percentage of the damage that enemy melee attacks deal to you. For a belt slot, that is a remarkably defensive effect, since it stacks neatly with armor and general damage reduction and makes you considerably tougher against tightly packed mobs.

Because this belt also brings vitality and one of the three primary attributes, it suits any class that loves to wade into the fray, such as the Barbarian, Crusader or Monk. Its benefit fizzles against ranged attacks, projectiles and ground effects, though, since those do not count as melee. My tip: use it mainly in builds where you deliberately fight in the middle of enemies, and combine it with a life-leech source to convert the damage you save directly into survival time.

A Narrow Range

The reduction rolls between 25–30%. The gap between a weak and a strong roll is small - even the worst copy cuts a full quarter of melee damage. When comparing two Strings of Ears, it pays to weigh the two attributes as much as the power. A Primal Ancient copy reaches 30%.

Two Attributes on One Belt

Vitality is fixed at +416–500, and the belt rolls a main stat of the same size: Dexterity, Intelligence or Strength. For the melee fighters named in the tip, that usually means Strength or Dexterity. If your copy has the wrong attribute, the Mystic can re-enchant exactly that property. A Primal Ancient String of Ears carries 500 Vitality and 500 main stat.

Since the power has no condition beyond being hit in melee, it works without any activation - you neither cast a skill nor keep a resource up.

Trophies on the Belt

The flavor text explains the name bluntly: a proud fighter displays the ears of those he has slain in battle.
