This ring transforms the Wizard's Ice Armor into an automatic defense system: it now noticeably reduces melee damage taken and, on top of that, casts Frost Nova on its own once you have absorbed enough damage. You thus gain both strong damage reduction and self-triggering mass control without sacrificing another slot.

For a melee-leaning or cold-heavy Wizard this is a huge survival gain, especially in higher Greater Rifts. Practical tip: keep your Ice Armor active at all times, because the entire effect hinges on it. Play deliberately close to enemies so the automatic Frost Nova freezes as many targets as possible and you can exploit the control window for safe damage.
