This aged, wolf-crested shield bears scars from hundreds of battles. It was presented to the original Knight Commander of Westmarch by King Korsikk as the first official act after his coronation. Since then, it has been borne by many of the order's greatest heroes, and its bearer is accorded all the respect such a badge of honor deserves.
Defender of Westmarch
This shield turns defense into offense: when you block an attack, there's a chance to summon a charging wolf that deals hefty weapon damage to every enemy in its path. The more you block, the more often the wolves come tearing through your foes.
Because the effect keys off blocking, it pays off most in builds with high block chance - meaning shield-wielding melee fighters who already stand in the fray and soak plenty of hits. The bonus block chance on the shield itself feeds straight into that. Practical tip: deliberately face dense packs, since a single wolf deals damage all along its run and strikes more targets the tighter the enemies are bunched together.
How hard the wolf hits
The wolf deals 800–1,000% weapon damage to every enemy it passes through. Since that is expressed as weapon damage, it grows with your weapon - a strong weapon makes the wolf more dangerous too. A high roll therefore keeps paying off as your weapon improves, and primal ancient shields reach the full 1000%.
The power text doesn't state the chance per block to summon a wolf. The one certainty: no blocks, no wolves.
Properties and followers
+11% Chance to Block is fixed - a value without a range that feeds the power directly. A random primary attribute at 626–750 joins it; take your class stat, since the shield is not tied to any specific class. Your follower can carry the Defender of Westmarch as well.
A shield with history
According to the flavor text, King Korsikk presented this wolf-crested shield to the original Knight Commander of Westmarch as the first official act after his coronation. It has since been borne by many of the order's greatest heroes and bears the scars of hundreds of battles. The wolf on the crest matches what bursts forth when you block.
