“There were three - Borax the barbarian, Patel the wizard, and Zatheria the demon hunter. They drew on their unwavering bond to each other to keep from falling to the twisted lord and his minions. Tired, cornered, and near death, they readied themselves for their final assault.” - Chronicles of the North

Explosion as a switch for damage and protection

The Orb of Infinite Depth makes the Wizard skill Explosive Blast the linchpin of your survival and damage balance: every hit raises your damage while lowering the damage you take, and this double effect stacks several times. You turn a single skill into a two-edged buff tool that lets you hit harder and absorb more at the same time.

That makes the orb excellent for an Explosive Blast build aiming at high difficulties without crumbling under glass-cannon fragility. The key lies in keeping the stacks up permanently. Tip: Regularly hit multiple enemies with Explosive Blast to build and maintain the full stack count — if it drops, you lose both damage and damage reduction in one stroke, so keep the rhythm going consistently.

Stacks, duration and roll range

Each stack lasts 6 seconds, and you can hold up to four. Only the damage portion per stack rolls, somewhere between 8 and 10%; the 20% damage reduction per stack is fixed. A high roll is worth chasing because it gets multiplied by each of the four stacks. The power works for the Wizard only.

Runes for Explosive Blast

Unruned, Explosive Blast has a 6 second cooldown, exactly as long as a stack lasts. That leaves you almost no margin when refreshing, so the rune choice matters:

  • Flash cuts the cooldown to 3 seconds, so refreshing the stacks becomes easy; the damage turns into Lightning.
  • Chain Reaction releases three explosions of 520% weapon damage as Fire each, giving you several hits per cast.
  • Short Fuse (Fire) detonates instantly, while Obliterate (Cold) widens the radius to 18 yards.

Match the element to the elemental bonuses on your gear.

Stats and companions

The orb has fixed damage, 626–750 Intelligence and 8–10% Critical Hit Chance. Arcane Power on Critical Hit, Maximum Arcane Power, Area Damage or Meteor damage complement it well. In Kanai's Cube the power sits in the weapon slot. It is often combined with Nilfur's Boast, The Grand Vizier, Mempo of Twilight, Squirt's Necklace and Convention of Elements.
