"All maddening angles and gnashing gears. These crossbows! How do they work?!" —Sergeant at Arms Carlavoie
Demon Machine
This crossbow has a temper of its own: on every attack there's a high chance it additionally fires explosive bolts that deal extra area damage on top of your normal hit. The weapon essentially shoots along with you for free.
Because the effect triggers per attack, it benefits heavily from high attack speed and many individual hits – ideal for a Demon Hunter who fires fast and often. The explosive bolts are pure bonus damage that catches multiple enemies at once. Practical tip: pair the crossbow with a rapid-firing primary skill so you trigger the explosions as often as possible – the higher your hit frequency, the denser the extra detonations rain down on your foes.
A Roll With a Wide Spread
The chance for explosive bolts ranges from 35–65%. The spread is wide: a weak copy fires them on just over a third of your attacks, a strong one on almost two thirds. When comparing two crossbows, look at this number first. Primal Ancient Demon Machines reach the full 65%.
Main Stat: Only One Choice Fits
The fixed roll is +(981–1,199)–(1,175–1,490) Fire Damage. The main stat rolls as +626–750 Dexterity or Intelligence - for a Demon Hunter only Dexterity makes sense. If you land a copy with Intelligence, a visit to the Mystic pays off, since she can re-enchant exactly that property. The crossbow is two-handed and fires at 1.10 attacks per second.
Gears and Winches
In the flavor text, Sergeant at Arms Carlavoie despairs over the mechanism: nothing but maddening angles and gnashing gears - how do these crossbows even work? The name Demon Machine fits that image of a weapon that is more apparatus than bow.
