This looks just like it was part of the infamous Red Soulstone. But that's impossible... It was destroyed long ago.

The unleashed ring of fire

Red Soul Shard is a special helm gem whose power breaks through periodically: you unleash a ring of fire that deals massive weapon damage to every enemy it passes through. Instead of a passive stat bonus, this gem delivers a recurring area explosion that fits the dark legacy of the Red Soulstone thematically.

Because the effect triggers on its own, it is class-independent and fits anywhere extra burst against groups is welcome. Tip: Socket it in a helm and position yourself so the ring of fire passes through as many enemies as possible when it fires; against dense packs you squeeze the most value out of each release.

What "Periodically" Means

The power names no fixed interval: you "periodically" struggle for control, and each time that happens the ring of fire appears. You therefore cannot choose the moment or trigger it with a skill. The ring deals 12,500% weapon damage to every enemy it passes through. Because that value is based on weapon damage, the gem benefits directly from a stronger weapon.

What Matters When It Fires

Since the ring travels and passes through enemies, the number of foes in its path decides the total damage. Against single targets it is one hit per trigger, while against dense groups the same ring strikes many enemies at once. There is no roll range in this form; the power only lists the single value of 12,500%. Its value therefore depends entirely on how often the ring meets groups of enemies when it fires.

A Piece of the Red Soulstone?

The flavor text doubts itself: the stone looks just like part of the infamous Red Soulstone, but that is impossible, since the Soulstone was destroyed long ago. The struggle for control described in the power fits that eerie origin.
