The Cape of the Dark Night automatically scatters Caltrops for the Demon Hunter the moment you are hit. The effect can only trigger every few seconds, but it places a slowing trap right at your position without any keypress. A blow you take becomes a small defensive reaction that slows approaching enemies.

That is why the cloak fits builds that already benefit from slowed foes or use Caltrops as part of their damage math without wanting to place the skill manually all the time. On defense especially, the effect buys you some breathing room. My tip: do not stay permanently on the run - in a pinch let yourself take a hit if it plants a slowing trap under a dense enemy group, since that bit of control can hand you back the distance you need.
