Season 27 "Light's Calling" lets the Angelic Crucible turn any Legendary into a flawless, build-defining Sanctified item.

Angelic Crucibles

Season 27 is officially subtitled "Light's Calling" and is widely known as the Season of Sanctified Power. It launched on August 26, 2022 and introduced one of the most elegant ideas of the late Diablo 3 era: the Angelic Crucible. These celestial artifacts drop anywhere in Sanctuary at level 70 — much like Ramaladni's Gift — and hand players a completely new tool for refining their gear with intent.

Unlike Season 26's Echo of Hatred theme, which revolved around the Echoing Nightmare dungeon, Season 27 targets your class sets directly — the backbone of nearly every endgame build. Rather than bolting on a new activity loop, Blizzard reached deep into build logic itself.

What the Crucible Does

When you sanctify an equippable Legendary with a Crucible, several things happen at once:

  • Every affix on the item is reforged to perfect Ancient-level values (Primal-Ancient quality)
  • The item's original Legendary Power is fully preserved
  • On top of that, the item gains one of three class-specific Sanctified powers
In one stroke the Crucible delivered two things players had wanted for years: flawless stats without endless re-rolling, and a brand-new, build-defining ability layered on top.

Diablo 3

Only equippable level-70 items can be sanctified. Crafted items cannot be sanctified, and your followers cannot equip Sanctified items either.

Why Perfect Stats Mattered So Much

Anyone who has played Diablo 3 at endgame knows the tedious ritual: an item drops, but the crucial affix rolled too low, so off it goes to the Mystic for a re-roll — hour after hour, chasing the perfect Primal Ancient. The Crucible sidestepped that grind entirely. Whatever Legendary you sanctify comes out with maximum values on every affix.

With a single Crucible you turn an average drop into a flawless endgame piece — and make it uniquely powerful at the same time.

That dramatically lowered the barrier to entry for the season and gave returning players in particular the satisfying sense of holding competitive gear almost immediately.

The Three Sanctified Powers Per Class

Each of the seven classes received its own set of three Sanctified powers, and you pick exactly one when you sanctify. The effects range from extra area damage and added mobility to entirely new mechanics that make familiar builds feel fresh again. The options included, among others:

  • Barbarian: Sanctified Whirlwind, Sanctified Hammer of the Ancients, Sanctified Wrath of the Berserker — for example a Whirlwind that pulls in and holds all enemies within 25 yards
  • Crusader: Sanctified Blessed Hammer, Sanctified Fist of the Heavens, Sanctified Falling Sword — Blessed Hammer damages enemies all along its path
  • Demon Hunter: Sanctified Strafe, Sanctified Cluster Arrow, Sanctified Vengeance
  • Monk: Sanctified Wave of Light, Sanctified Way of the Hundred Fists, Sanctified Seven-Sided Strike
  • Necromancer: Sanctified Command Golem, Sanctified Army of the Dead, Sanctified Death Nova — the Golem automatically collects corpses for corpse-spending abilities
  • Witch Doctor: Sanctified Haunt, Sanctified Horrify, Sanctified Gargantuan
  • Wizard: Sanctified Magic Missile, Sanctified Arcane Orb, Sanctified Storm Armor — Storm Armor charges over 30 seconds, then unleashes a thunderbolt that instantly kills a random enemy
Crucially, you may sanctify as many items as you like, but you can only ever equip one Sanctified item at a time. That forces a genuine choice rather than simply stacking the effect into every slot.

Limits and Pacing

Angelic Crucibles and Sanctified items are strictly seasonal: they only exist in Seasonal play and do not transfer to your non-seasonal heroes when the season ends. Trying the new powers meant rolling a seasonal character.

To make the theme land, Blizzard doubled the drop rate of Crucibles after PTR feedback, so you could start experimenting early in the season. Because each power supports a different playstyle, it paid to sanctify several items and swap in the right variant depending on whether you were pushing Greater Rifts or speed-farming. One item tuned for maximum mobility while farming, another for raw damage on a push — that swap became part of the seasonal routine.

Seasonal Rewards and the Season Journey

As in every season, Season 27 offered Haedrig's Gift: completing Chapters 2, 3 and 4 of the Season Journey awarded three gifts that together formed a complete class set. Only one set can be unlocked this way per season (across Hardcore and Softcore combined), and the set matches the class you're playing when you open each gift — so the choice deserves thought. To claim the full bonus you opened all three gifts on the same character.

Non-Seasonal Changes

The patch also brought permanent improvements that apply outside of seasons:

  • Adventure Mode is now unlocked for all accounts by default — no story playthrough required
  • All players have immediate access through Torment 6; reaching level 70 unlocks Torment 7 through Torment 16
  • Uber Boss Realms now close automatically 60 seconds after a victory, and multiple portals to the same realm can be opened in one session
  • Experience from the Echoing Nightmare was reduced by 83% to rebalance the mechanic
Several class sets were also reworked, including Armor of Akkhan (Crusader), Trag'Oul's Avatar (Necromancer) and Delsere's Magnum Opus (Wizard).

Impact on the Meta

Season 27 is still regarded as one of the best set upgrades of the late Diablo 3 era. Because the Sanctified powers directly strengthened core set builds, numerous archetypes climbed noticeably in the Greater Rift tiers, and several previously underwhelming builds suddenly became competitive. Some build variants even existed only during this season, because they depended entirely on a specific power.

  • Familiar set builds played fresh, but not overcomplicated
  • The choice between three powers created real build diversity instead of a single dominant option
  • The theme tied neatly into the series' celestial motifs and set the stage for later seasonal experiments
For veterans and returning players alike, "Light's Calling" was the perfect moment to rediscover a favorite class — with perfect gear and a fresh, powerful mechanic to build around.
