The Altar of Rites was introduced in Season 28 ("Rites of Sanctuary") and, since Season 30, is a permanent fixture of every Season. It is a skill board of 26 Seals and 3 Legendary Potion powers that you unlock step by step by sacrificing reagents — transforming your seasonal character from a fragile fresh-70 into a nearly unkillable endgame powerhouse. No other seasonal feature delivers this much power per hour invested.
What Is the Altar of Rites?
The Altar is an account-wide, per-Season progression board. Once unlocked, every node stays active for the entire Season — across all seasonal heroes on your account, regardless of class. In the lore, the Nephalem unearthed the ancient monolith in the Festering Woods; you interact with it in the town of New Tristram.
The board has two kinds of nodes:
- Seals: 26 permanent power nodes, ranging from quality-of-life effects to damage and survival boosts and powerful endgame multipliers.
- Legendary Potions: 3 independent nodes that permanently charge your healing potion with a strong added effect.
Why the Altar Is So Strong
The sum of all nodes is an enormous multiplier: stacked damage reduction, percent increased damage, movement speed, automatic loot pickup, and crowd-control immunity. In practice, a fully completed Altar pushes your hero several Greater Rift tiers higher on identical gear.
Unlocking It: How to Find and Use the Altar
- Create a seasonal character (tick "Season" at hero creation).
- You can use the Altar from level 1 — no item and no quest completion required.
- Go to town in New Tristram (Act I). The Altar stands prominently near the usual town NPCs.
- Interact with the Altar to open the board of 26 Seals and 3 potions.
- Select an unlockable node to see the required reagents, gather them, and sacrifice them to activate the power.

The Unlock Rules
- Chains: To unlock a Seal, the preceding Seal must already be active (e.g. Seal A before B or C). The exception is three off-set Seals that are reachable independently.
- Fixed cost sequence: Whichever unlockable Seal you pick next, the cost follows a fixed sequence. After each purchase the next tier advances to its predetermined reagent.
- Potions are independent: The 3 potion powers sit outside the Seal chain and use their own currency: Primordial Ashes.
The Seals in Detail
The 26 Seals cover four areas of effect. The most important:
Comfort & Quality-of-Life
- Items have no level requirement — you can equip endgame gear while leveling (a massive power spike on the way to 70).
- Auto-pickup of progress orbs from Nephalem and Greater Rifts.
- Pet picks up Death's Breath and even salvages common, magic, and rare items automatically.
- Pools of Reflection last the entire Season and aren't removed by death — a permanent +XP bonus.
Damage
- +5% Damage (on several seals) — adds up to a meaningful total bonus.
- +5% damage against elites (multiple) and +5% damage against bosses.
- +5% highest elemental damage bonus — scales with your strongest element.
- Critical hits grant resource — resource sustain for hungry builds.
Survival
- Immunity to crowd control — one of the most valuable seals: no more freeze, stun, or slow effects.
- Passability — you walk through enemies, no more getting stuck.
- Multiple layers of damage reduction (ranged, melee, elite) and +5% Dodge.
- Health globes grant a shield worth 5% of your maximum life.
Farm Efficiency
- Double Death's Breath drops and double Bounty Caches.
- Double legendary chance from Kadala (Blood Shard gambling).
- Elite packs drop one extra progress orb — faster Greater Rifts.
The 3 Legendary Potions
Potion nodes permanently upgrade your healing-potion slot and are independent of the Seal chain:
- Runic Circles: On quaff, manifest one of three runic circles — granting increased damage, cooldown reduction, or resource-cost reduction.
- Weaken: All enemies within 25 yards deal 25% less damage.
- Shrine Effect: On quaff, gain a random shrine effect (e.g. Fervor, Frenzied).
[info] Potions require no Seal reagents — you can unlock them in parallel with the Seal chain as soon as you've salvaged enough Primal items.
The Reagents — What You Sacrifice
The 26 Seals follow a fixed cost sequence. Roughly cheap to expensive:
- Early: 10 Reusable Parts, then 1 Flawless Diamond + 15 Arcane Dust + 20 Reusable Parts.
- Mid: 1 Greater Rift Keystone + 10 Death's Breath; a class-specific Set helm; 20 Forgotten Souls + 10 each of the five bounty materials (Khanduran Rune, Caldeum Nightshade, Arreat War Tapestry, Corrupted Angel Flesh, Westmarch Holy Water).
- Uber boss materials: Leoric's Regret, Vial of Putridness, Idol of Terror, Heart of Fright — drops from the Uber bosses (Infernal Machine portals).
- High: 1,100 / 1,300 / 1,400 / 1,500 / 1,600 Blood Shards (the last tier wants a GR-110 keystone); Ramaladni's Gift; Ring of Royal Grandeur; an Ancient Hellfire Amulet; Whisper of Atonement rank 125; an augmented weapon.
- Hardest node: the Staff of Herding — requires several rare farm materials and is by far the most time-consuming.
Recommended Unlock Order
Since reagent costs rise in a fixed order, the key question is: where does early effort pay off most? A proven priority strategy:
- Grab "Items have no level requirement" early — you level in endgame gear, a gigantic early-game boost.
- Double Bounty Caches and double Death's Breath — accelerate the material supply for everything else.
- Pools of Reflection (permanent) for the lasting +XP bonus — the earlier, the more Paragon over the Season.
- Potion powers in parallel: as you salvage Primal items, unlock the Weaken potion (25% less enemy damage) first for survivability.
- Take damage and damage-reduction seals along the chain as you work toward the comfort nodes.
- Crowd-control immunity + Passability — the two biggest quality-of-life jumps; don't skip them.
- Save the expensive end nodes (Blood Shard tiers, Staff of Herding, augmented weapon) for last, once your hero is strong enough for GR 110.
The Reward at the End
Unlocking all 26 Seals and all 3 potions grants the cosmetic Wings of Terror — the prestige item that marks a fully completed Altar.
Common Mistakes
- Wasting reagents on the "wrong" node: plan your path before spending expensive materials like Uber-boss drops or Blood Shards.
- Forgetting the potions: many players hoard Primal items in the stash instead of salvaging them for Primordial Ashes — the potion powers are enormous.
- Underrating comfort seals: "no level requirement" and auto-pickup look minor but save hours and multiply your power-building pace.
- Farming Petrified Scream too late: start killing GR Guardians early, or this drop will block your progress.
Pro Tips
- Farm deliberately: bounties for the five bounty materials and Death's Breath, Greater Rifts for Blood Shards and Petrified Scream, Uber bosses (Infernal Machine) for the unique Idol/Vial reagents.
- Craft Whisper of Atonement rank 125 ahead of time — it costs Forgotten Souls and Ascended Devotion, so start early.
- Augmented weapon: use a low-rank Legendary Gem in an old weapon to satisfy that node cheaply — you don't have to sacrifice a top weapon.
- Co-op: reagents drop per player, but higher group GRs make Blood Shard and Guardian drops available faster.
The Altar of Rites turns every Season into a progression project: plan your path, farm with purpose, and a fully completed Altar makes your hero a record-breaking force — with the Wings of Terror to prove it.
