The Darkening of Tristram Returned in January 2026

The annual Diablo anniversary event ran from January 1 to February 1, 2026 — with the RetroVision cathedral, the Dark Lord and exclusive loot.

For the Diablo anniversary, 'The Darkening of Tristram' returned to Sanctuary in early 2026 as well — Blizzard's yearly homage to the first Diablo, rebuilt inside the Diablo III engine.

The schedule

  • January 1, 2026, 00:00 UTC — cultists appear in Adventure Mode
  • January 4, 2026, 00:00 UTC — the portal into Tristram's past opens
  • February 1, 2026, 00:00 UTC — both parts of the event end

How the event plays out

The journey starts by hunting down mysterious cultists stirring up trouble in Adventure Mode. Follow their trail and you find clues pointing to a portal — and shortly after you are standing in front of an all too familiar cathedral.

Inside waits a realm of RetroVision™: familiar enemies and long-lost items from Diablo I, rendered with Diablo III's tools. Deep below the catacombs lurks the Dark Lord himself.

Rewards

The event drops a whole set of exclusive rewards: unique transmogrification effects, achievements, portraits and pets. Some of it lies almost on your path, other pieces require you to comb through every corner of the dungeon or unlock every achievement.

The anniversary event traditionally returns every year in early January. If you missed the 2026 rewards, the next opportunity is expected in January 2027.
