"This massive mace does more than merely slay its victims. It quite literally shatters their souls, releasing the energy contained within in a massive blast. If it was indeed crafted by my brother Malthael, as I suspect, it may have been a failed first attempt to free human souls for his consumption. How long, I wonder, had his madness gone unnoticed by those closest to him?" —Tyrael, Aspect of Wisdom

Soulsmasher

The Soulsmasher builds an entire playstyle around Life per Kill: instead of healing you for each kill, the two-hander makes slain foes explode, hurling a large portion of your Life-per-Kill value as area damage onto everyone nearby. You trade away the healing and turn it into a chain explosion that shreds dense groups.

That makes this mace interesting for builds stacking high Life per Kill with enough up-front damage to land the first kill that triggers the avalanche. Tip: maximize your Life-per-Kill value across several items, since it directly sets the explosion's force. At the same time, secure another healing source like Life on Hit or lifesteal, because this weapon removes your usual kill healing.

The math behind the blast

Every slain enemy explodes, dealing 450–600% of your Life per Kill as damage to all enemies within 20 yards. A copy at 546% sits in the upper range, and a Primal Ancient delivers the full 600%. So two values multiply: the mace's percentage and the amount of Life per Kill on your gear.

The mace brings its own fuel

Conveniently, Soulsmasher itself carries a fixed +9,142–13,371 Life after Each Kill, so part of the foundation for its explosion is already built into the weapon. That value can no longer heal you, but it still counts toward the damage. It also rolls a main stat at 946 to 1125 points. The principle recalls Death's Bargain, which turns Life per Second into a damage aura in the same way.

Tyrael's suspicion

In the flavor text, Tyrael, Aspect of Wisdom, suspects that his brother Malthael crafted the mace - perhaps as a failed first attempt to free human souls for his own consumption. The weapon shatters its victims' souls and releases their energy in a massive blast. Tyrael wonders how long Malthael's madness went unnoticed by those closest to him.
