Shard of Hate

This sword rewards elementally themed playstyles with an extra burst of damage: your elemental skills have a chance to trigger a powerful proc whose type depends on the element. Cold skills summon a Freezing Skull, Poison skills set off a Poison Nova, and Lightning skills fire a Charged Bolt. Each of these effects adds a sizable portion of your weapon damage.

The Shard of Hate is class-neutral and suits any build that commits to Cold, Poison, or Lightning and thereby keeps feeding the matching trigger. My tip: stick to a single element type and stack the corresponding elemental damage bonuses, so the triggered proc not only fires often but is also fully carried by the rest of your multipliers.

Only Three Elements Trigger It

The power names exactly three pairings: Cold leads to Freezing Skull, Poison to Poison Nova and Lightning to Charged Bolt. Fire, Holy, Arcane and Physical skills do not trigger the special attack. If you mainly play one of those elements, the sword only gives you its stats. The triggered attack's damage rolls in the 200–250% weapon damage range, and a Primal Ancient sword has the full 250%. The text does not reveal how high the trigger chance is.

The Sword's Stats

Shard of Hate is a one-handed weapon with 168-392 damage at 1.40 attacks per second and fits in either the main hand or the off-hand. Two properties roll at random: a main stat at 626–750 and an elemental damage roll of (981–1,199)–(1,175–1,490). For the element, one of the three triggering elements is the obvious choice. If either property rolls wrong, the Mystic can enchant it anew. You can also hand the sword to a follower.

Mephisto's Ire

According to the flavor text, Mephisto spoke these words to Hephasto, Chief Weaponsmith of the Burning Hells, when the blade was delivered: would that all the misbegotten spawn of his wayward daughter had but one heart he might plunge it through, so they might all enjoy the gift of his pitiless ire.
