The face within the center of the cross is the shrunken visage of an ancient priest of Rathma. He appears to be judging you unfavorably.
Empowered Grim Scythe
This phylactery ties your damage directly to your essence regeneration: the more essence Grim Scythe restores, the harder the skill hits. That makes it worth pushing essence cost and recovery aggressively rather than letting your resource trickle back passively. For the Necromancer this creates a self-fueling loop where your resource doubles as your damage multiplier.
The item anchors a scythe-focused Necromancer who mows down packs at high attack speed while topping off essence. Tip: Look for sources that boost essence recovered per hit, and position so the scythe sweeps as many targets as possible at once – more enemies struck means more essence regained and noticeably more damage per swing.
Where the bonus comes from
Grim Scythe generates 12 Essence per enemy hit and, unruned, deals 150% weapon damage as Physical. For every point of Essence it restores, the rolled bonus of 65 to 80% is added, so a high roll pays off with every single point. What counts is how much Essence actually flows back: if your pool is already full, there is nothing to restore. That is why spending Essence regularly helps, and Maximum Essence gives you more headroom.
Grim Scythe runes
- Dual Scythes swings two scythes, also generates 12 Essence per enemy hit and pushes enemies together, lining up more targets for the next swing.
- Frost Scythe raises your attack speed by 1% per enemy hit, up to 15 times, and switches to Cold damage.
- Blood Scythe heals you for 1% of your health per enemy hit.
- Cursed Scythe has a 15% chance to afflict enemies with a random curse.
Stats and companions
The fixed properties are damage, 626–750 Intelligence and 626–750 Vitality. Critical Hit Chance, Grim Scythe damage, Area Damage and Cooldown Reduction are also worth looking for. The phylactery is often combined with Andariel's Visage, Razeth's Volition, Haunted Visions, Aquila Cuirass, Trag'Oul's Corroded Fang and Nayr's Black Death.
According to the flavor text, the shrunken visage of an ancient priest of Rathma stares out from the center of the cross, and he appears to judge you unfavorably.
