"This crossbow is a miracle of mechanical innovation, though its builder remains unknown. In addition to firing ordinary quarrels, the Helltrapper may also fire specialized ammunition delivering caltrops, explosive spiked mines, and even self-expanding turrets." —The Craft of War by Diadra the Scholar

Random traps from a hand crossbow

The Helltrapper turns your Demon Hunter into a walking trap pit: on hit there's a chance to automatically trigger Spike Trap, Caltrops or a Sentry, without you having to cast those skills yourself. So you fire off extra sources of damage on the side while focusing on your main rotation. That saves resources and adds free bonus damage to your setup.

Because the trigger is tied to your hits, the hand crossbow pairs superbly with fast, multi-hit attacks that generate many proc chances. My tip: build so that you don't already have those skills on your bar manually, and the Helltrapper becomes genuine added value rather than a duplicate. That way you incidentally amass a small arsenal of automatic traps that tightens your grip on the battlefield.

Roll range and chance

The chance rolls between 7 and 10% per hit; a Primal Ancient delivers the full 10%. Which of the three traps appears is left to chance, so you can't count on any single one of them.

What the three traps do

  • Caltrops slow all enemies within 12 yards by 60% once triggered and last 6 seconds.
  • Sentry fires at nearby enemies for 30 seconds, dealing 280% weapon damage; up to 2 turrets can be active at once.
  • Spike Trap, according to its description, stays inactive until you use another Hatred spender and then explodes for 1160% weapon damage as Fire within 8 yards. Without a Hatred spender on your bar, this part of the power does little for you.

Stats and background

Every copy carries +626–750 Dexterity, plus bonus damage of +858–1,049 to 1,028–1,304. As a hand crossbow, the Helltrapper fits either the main hand or the off-hand.

Like Emimei's Duffel, the flavor text comes from The Craft of War by Diadra the Scholar. She calls the crossbow a miracle of mechanical innovation by an unknown builder that fires not only quarrels but also caltrops, explosive spiked mines and self-expanding turrets - exactly what the power delivers.
