Righteousness

Righteousness is a resource passive that makes your primary skills generate extra Wrath and also raises your maximum Wrath. Both effects target the Crusader's resource economy directly and ease the common problem of empty Wrath pools.

The larger Wrath reserve gives you more buffer to fire expensive spenders like Shield Bash, Fist of the Heavens or Phalanx in quick succession, while the bonus Wrath per generator hit noticeably speeds up your resupply. That's especially valuable in builds that burn a lot of Wrath yet lack other sources such as block generation. Since nearly every setup uses a primary skill to refill, Righteousness is broadly applicable and a reliable gap-filler when you run dry. If your build has no resource trouble anyway, though, the slot is better spent on a damage or defensive passive.

The two parts in detail

The passive has two separate effects:

  • +3 Wrath per primary skill: the Crusader's primary skills – Punish, Slash, Smite and Justice – each generate 5 Wrath per attack. Righteousness adds 3 more, a substantial relative increase.
  • +30 maximum Wrath: that equals exactly the cost of one Shield Bash or Fist of the Heavens, both of which spend 30 Wrath. So you can chain one more such spender before the pool runs dry.

The passive unlocks at level 16 and already supports the early part of levelling.

When the extra Wrath matters most

The bonus applies per attack with a primary skill. The faster you use it, the more extra Wrath adds up. The Thorns of the Invoker set, for example, greatly raises the attack speed of Punish and Slash at 6 pieces – more attacks mean more triggers of the passive.

Righteousness or Insurmountable?

Both passives solve the same problem in different ways. Insurmountable supplies Wrath through blocked attacks and therefore depends on your shield and block chance. Righteousness is not tied to any gear, only to using a primary skill at all. If you play without a primary skill and generate Wrath from other sources such as Provoke, the first part does nothing – but the larger Wrath pool still works.
