"Archew, the Saint of Entsteig, is remembered for his many duels with the ruffians of that city. It was said that his gauntlet lay on the street more often than on his hand." —Archibald Kerne
St. Archew's Gage
St. Archew's Gage are defensive gloves for risky encounters: the first hit a pack of elites lands on you grants a brief shield that absorbs a large portion of your maximum life as damage. Right when you meet a dangerous elite group, you get a safety cushion that soaks the first heavy blow.
That makes the gloves valuable for builds that aggressively dive into elite packs in Greater Rifts and must survive the devastating opening hit. Tip: stack as much maximum life as possible, since the shield scales directly with it - the bigger your life pool, the thicker the shield. Note that the effect triggers only once per encounter, so plan your other defensive cooldowns for the seconds afterward.
What the roll range means
The shield equals 120–150% of your maximum Life and lasts 10 seconds. Even the lowest roll absorbs more than your whole life bar; a copy at 145% sits near the top, and a Primal Ancient reaches the full 150%. Because the power is tied to the elite pack, the next elite group you run into grants a fresh shield. Use those 10 seconds to take out the most dangerous members of the pack while the buffer holds.
Wear them or cube them
The power can be activated in the armor slot of Kanai's Cube, which is handy when your glove slot is needed for a set piece or other gloves. If you wear St. Archew's Gage yourself, look for Critical Hit Chance and Critical Hit Damage next to the main stat at 626 to 750 points, followed by Attack Speed, Cooldown Reduction or Area Damage.
The gloves are frequently paired with Squirt's Necklace, Aquila Cuirass, Convention of Elements, Blackthorne's Jousting Mail, Leoric's Crown and the ring Unity.
The flavor text by Archibald Kerne recalls Archew, the Saint of Entsteig, and his many duels with the city's ruffians - his gauntlet supposedly lay on the street more often than on his hand. A thrown-down gauntlet as a challenge suits a power that kicks in on the very first blow of a fight.
