Upgraded Skeletal Mages with protection
Razeth's Volition makes your Skeletal Mage automatically carry the effects of the Gift of Death and Singularity runes, so you reap the benefits of two runes without having to choose. On top of that the shoulders grant damage reduction while you are not at full Essence, which fits a resource-hungry summoner playstyle perfectly.
For Necromancer builds centered on Skeletal Mages this is a core piece, bundling offense and survivability. Tip: Deliberately play at a lower Essence level to keep the damage reduction up as much as possible, and use the Skeletal Mage's freed-up rune choice for a third rune to fully exploit the value of the doubled rune.
Why Singularity and the Damage Reduction Fit Together
The Singularity rune consumes all of your Essence on cast and increases the mage's damage by 3% per point consumed. After every mage you are therefore no longer at full Essence, which is exactly the condition for the shoulders' damage reduction. That reduction rolls in the 35–50% range, and a Primal Ancient copy has the full 50%. Gift of Death makes every risen mage leave a corpse behind when it dies or expires.
Using the Freed Rune Slot
With two rune effects already supplied by the shoulders, you pick one of the others:
- Life Support: mages cost 10% health but last 2 seconds longer than the usual 6.
- Contamination: a mage channeling a decay aura for 100% weapon damage as Poison.
- Skeleton Archer: Cold damage plus up to 10 stacks of attack speed for you.
Rolls and Companion Pieces
A fixed 5–8% reduction to all resource costs matters directly when each mage costs 40 Essence. For the main stat you want Intelligence out of the 416–500 possible points, plus Vitality or cooldown reduction. The shoulders are often combined with Krysbin's Sentence, Reilena's Shadowhook, Aquila Cuirass, Steuart's Greaves and Haunted Visions. The flavor text sums up Razeth: if you did not fear him, you feared the dark powers of his minions.
