Effect
Sword and Board
Sword and Board is a defensive passive that only works while you are wielding a shield. When you are, it noticeably reduces both incoming damage and your fury costs – a double reward for choosing against the two-hander. It turns shield-based barbarians into genuine bulwarks.
The lower fury consumption is often just as valuable as the damage reduction, since it lets you use expensive spenders more frequently. The passive earns its slot whenever your build deliberately leans on a shield and survivability, such as a group tank or a defensive push setup. If you play dual-wield or a two-handed weapon instead, it does nothing at all – the shield requirement is the only, but hard, condition.
What the shield means for your gear
The passive requires a shield in your off-hand. That rules out dual-wielding and two-handed weapons and leaves room for a one-handed weapon in your main hand. Barbarians can also wield one-handed mighty weapons there, such as Blade of the Warlord, which turns Bash into a Fury spender.
Sword and Board only unlocks at level 66, at the end of the leveling phase.
The cost reduction in practice
The 20% applies to all Fury costs. Every skill that spends Fury, such as Sprint, Rend, Whirlwind or Ancient Spear, becomes a fifth cheaper. That works like extra Fury generation: with the same amount of Fury you use your spenders more often without having to rely on a generator more.
Working with other protective effects
The 30% reduction in damage taken applies permanently as long as the shield is equipped. Ignore Pain stacks another strong reduction on top for a short window, and War Cry raises your Armor. Nerves of Steel remains the insurance against fatal hits. In this combination, Sword and Board forms the constant foundation on which the time-limited effects build.
